はめる【嵌める･填める】

1 〔身に付ける〕 put [pull] on; 〔外側を取り巻く〕 place 《a hoop》 around.

●手袋をはめる pull [put] on one's gloves

・指輪をはめたまま still wearing one's ring; without taking off one's ring

・樽(_たる)にたがをはめる hoop a barrel

・予算に枠をはめる place restrictions on a budget

・子供を一定の型にはめる教育 education that forces children into a [the same] mold.

●彼は左手の薬指に指輪をはめていた. He had [wore] a ring on the third finger of his left hand.

・彼女はいつも結婚指輪をはめっぱなしだ. She never took off her wedding ring.

2 〔収める〕 put sth in place; insert; put in; (ほぞ穴に) tail; house; 〔合わせる〕 fit 《a door into a frame》.

●栓をはめる insert a cork [stopper]

・戸をはめる fit (in) a door

・ボタンをはめる button 《one's shirt》

・窓枠にガラスをはめる fit glass in a pane

・眼鏡のフレームにレンズをはめる put [insert, mount, install] lenses into eyeglass frames

・蛇口にホースをはめる attach a hose to a faucet

・メロディーに歌詞をはめる add lyrics to a melody.

3 〔陥れる〕 entrap; ensnare; deceive; take in.

●はめられる be entrapped [ensnared]; fall into a trap; be [get] taken in.

●あいつにまんまとはめられた. I was completely taken in by him.
